Standards
| NCSS |
The National Council for Social Studies framework of the standards consists of ten themes which correspond with one or more relevant disciplines. The standards address all educational levels from elementary to high school and includes samples of classroom activities that will help students meet each standard. |
African-American History Mandates
| New Jersey |
The Amistad Bill (A1301), which became law in 2002, calls on New Jersey schools to incorporate African-American history into their social studies curriculum. This same bill also created the Amistad Commission which is responsible for ensuring that the mandate is carried out. |
| Philadelphia |
Beginning in 2005, Philadelphia School District mandated that all students take an African-American history course as a requirement for graduation. Click here to learn more about Philadelphia's mandate. |
| Florida |
In 2004, Florida Statute 1003.42 was passed which mandated that all public schools infuse African-American history into their curriculum. Click here to learn more about what Florida is doing to meet their mandate. |
